That is why, on Monday 18th March, pupils from year 7 and 8 were given the chance to have a go at bicycle motocross, or more popularly known as BMX. after an impressive demonstration from the professionals, the students were challenged to race around an obstacle course in the fastest possible time. Debate Mate| This year the AMHS team took part in two debates the first one was at Albian Academy, in which they were victorious and won all the debates, this then allowed them to progress and compete at Wright Robinson. At the moment the debate team are eagerly awaiting the results for their latest set of debates. The results will announce which teams are part of the top eight; if Abraham Moss are part of the top eight, they may have a chance to go to London to debate at the House of Commons. The students give up an hour of their time every Monday to practice for future debates and competitions. We caught up with Mohja (who is part of the debate mate team) and asked what she enjoyed about debate mate and what makes her so dedicated to it, she replied, “I enjoy it because it lets me express my views and it has also helped me to find my voice and improved my confidence.” So far this year the debate team have been very successful and they are now aspiring to go and debate at the House of Commons in London. According to Ofsted “Debate Mate is a wonderful organisation which inspires children to speak and debate with confidence and authority” - we couldn’t agree more! Carol Ann Duffy| On Wednesday 30th January, Carol Ann Duffy hosted an afternoon of poetry where she performed a range of inspirational poems for students from across Manchester. Based on her own life experiences she presented a unique experience alongside talented musician George Sampson. Carol Ann Duffy was appointed Britain’s Poet Laureate in May 2009 and still holds the prestigious title. Specialising in poetry and writing plays, she is widely recognised for addressing complicated matters in today’s society such as oppression, gender and violence. The pupils from Abraham Moss High School were invited alongside other schools in Manchester. Some students also performed their own pieces of poetry written in their native language. The poetry afternoon was very interactive with various games to involve students in the poems. Elizabeth, a student who attended the performance, said she, “enjoyed the poem Meeting Midnight from Carol Ann Duffy’s New & Collected Poems For Children.” Pupils had lots of fun and it was a very enjoyable and motivational! We asked the students who attended the poetry afternoon their thoughts on Carol Ann Duffy’s performance: “Overall it was a very interesting experience, especially as her poems were performed alongside a musician.” - Elizabeth “The music by George Sampson made it an enjoyable experience that was very soothing and Carol’s poems were very personal and unique. She is an inspirational feminist.” - Rijaan “The afternoon was very interactive. Her poems were based on life experiences particularly about love. We learnt about Medieval instruments and it was very interesting how they incorporated Medieval music into poetry to make it more empowering.” - Nabihah Comenius Project| By: Mohja In October 2012 some year 9 students who were part of the school’s Comenius project , had the opportunity to go on a visit to Bulgaria , accompanied by 3 members of staff. They told us a little about their experience: “ On Monday morning we got up and went into school, where we were met by pupils in traditional dress offering us food , we started off with a tour of the school which we thought was very different to our own – in comparison it had very few resources” During the trip they were able to see some local historical sites, including Tatul and Perperikon and they visited the town of Zlatograd. They also managed to visit the town hall twice where they met the local councillor and the mayor. Lucky them! Students from both schools were asking lots of questions about each other and finding out about the many differences and similarities about each other. Let’s hope that the friendships can continue, which is the main purpose of the project , bringing pupils all around Europe together. Primary School| By Haleema We warmly welcome all the new pupils joining the new Primary School and all the new staff. This Primary school has been opened since October 2012 and is open for reception children at the moment. Abraham Moss High School is planning on making the school an ‘all through’ 5-16 years school from reception to year 11. So they want to expand the Primary school each year. All children and teachers are very well adapted to the new school and making it an amazing place for the children achieve the best they can. Some of the subjects that are being taught are: P.E, art and design, modern foreign languages and expressive art. This Primary school will be adding to the Crumpsall community and will bring people together like the high school has been doing for many years. Red Nose Day| On the 14th March 2013 they started their plan to raise money. in the morning they presented an assembly to the year 10’s. Due to technical difficulties they had to present the whole assembly from memory. Despite this set back the assembly was still a resounding success as everyone was ready to help raise some money! On the same day (14th March 2013) at lunch time 10 black held a cafe where people could buy food and sit to eat. Many people attended and by the end all the food had sold out. 15th March 2013 was red nose day all over the UK and Abraham Moss High School took part and worn one item of red clothing for a £1. It was refreshing to see a splash of colour added to the business like uniform and all for a good cause. During that lunch time 10 black held a karaoke/disco party. This was open for all year 10’s and teachers. They had to pay a £1 to enter and see different students and teachers sing. This was a perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy themselves whilst helping to raise money. Red nose day here at Abraham Moss High School was an amazing achievement as they raised an astonishing £488. this took hard work and dedication but it defiantly payed off. Trip to the Velodrome!| By Mohja The olympics coming to london was a once in a lifetime opportunity , so Abraham Moss were very thankful when the BBC schools news report provided us with places for two pupils to attend the cycling races on August 6th. Archange and Salim shared a with us a quick overview of their experience: Entering the Olympic Park was similar to entering the departure lounge in an airport. We had to walk through a metal detector and have our bags checked before being able to proceed into the Park. It was such as buzz waiting in the queue and we couldn’t stop smiling, knowing we were experiencing such a historic event. The next day we went to the BBC Media Centre where we met with Sarah Burbedge (Senior Producer, School Report 2012). Here we created our own web page and were interviewed live on BBC Radio Manchester and Radio 5 Live. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport/19162841 to read our full story! Moss gets Arty-Wordy| My Dearest Brother I remain bewildered, for our nemesis is lurking. His minion remains conscious of my actions, however this postcard is unknown. The brutal chariot race is near the end, and I can sense the bitterness in the air. Many have been willingly injured today; they show no mercy to components, yet the crowd go wild and applause, scream and shout. I see families’ sorrow of their beloved ones who have rode in the Circus Maximus; they may enter paradise with pride and bravery. The nemesis carry more than just horses and chariots, but deadly weapons, with their sharp edges showered in lethal poisons, with their large numbers whom of which have been punished for their innocence. I write to you today in urge for your safety; tomorrow is your day, bring pride to our family name but danger seeks you, danger hunts you, dangers lives on you! Our nemesis is out for a kill with your name on it...he can see me...he`s swerving towards me..he`s coming for me. Tell mother I love her dearly and I wish you luck for your race! Your dearest sister. Both students and staff had a settled journey to the Manchester Art Gallery via coach. Once they had reached the gallery, they were enlightened with a pleasant welcome from the MMU students, who directed the group to a designated room. The aims were briefly summarised: to take inspiration from the art pieces and achieve a mystical piece of writing in any format! Groups of 10 students were assigned projects and a deadline of eleven o`clock. After groups completed their projects with the help of teachers and MMU students, they met up in the original location where a summary was held. Each group presented their final outcome with concepts behind the writing piece. To top the workshop off, students were invited to join the MMU `Get Creative` writing competition, which entailed students get inspired by an art piece to write a postcard of a maximum of 200 words. King David Project| ‘‘We don’t want to blur our differences, but instead learn to accept them as well as celebrating them’’ - King David student The initial driving idea of this project was for the Holocaust Memorial Day, Since we started, a lot of our views and opinions about each other have changed. Friends have been made, students educated and lives have been remembered. Most importantly bridges are beginning to be built and communities are coming together through education and friendship. |

Debate mate is a national programme that allows teenagers to debate a range of topics. The skills gained by joining debate mate have been very useful to the members as they have been able to transfer them to other subjects such as English. Haleema said, “Debate Mate has been a massive boost to my confidence and has made me better at planning.: Abraham Moss High School’s debate team is currently the third best in the country. The team consists of students from year 8, 9, and 10. Our teachers, Miss Scott and Mr Emmery, are part of the debate team at Manchester University and are also our mentors.

Here at Abraham Moss High School, 10 black decided to theme their assembly around red nose day. They wanted to do something ‘funny for money’ and succeeded in doing so by raising £488 overall.

The Gifted and Talented students - varying from Year 8 to Year 10 - attending Abraham Moss High School visited the Manchester Art Gallery to participate in a workshop organised by the Manchester Metropolitan University students on the 6

The students from Abraham Moss High School have recently been in contact with pupils from King David High School for a linking communities project. The aim of the project was to connect people from different cultures and backgrounds. Over the last few months we have been on various visits such as a day out to the cinema to watch a special Holocaust Memorial Day film of the survivors. We joined this project so we could learn about each other’s cultures, understand our religions, be able to put our differences aside and find our similarities. “We don’t want to blur our differences but instead to accept them.” This is a quote from a King David High School student that was part of the project. It really sums up the purpose of the project.
however as it has progressed we have realised there is much more to the project; we can learn from it and build bridges between our communities. Mrs Takizer, a Humanities teacher mentioned “it’s vital that local community members of both schools in Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall integrate to celebrate and share their similarities and differences; our school motto says
